Benefits

  1. For consumption of people from both banks of Lam Nan Pong.
  2. To irrigated the cultivation areas of 264,020 rais. In Muang Khon Kean, Nam Pong District and Sumsoong district, Khon Khon Province for 140,764 rais and 123,256 Rais in Chiang Yeun District, Kosumpisai District in Mahasarakham Province.
  3. To enable 26,840 farmer families in Muang Khon Kean , Nam Pong District, Sumsoong District in Khon Kean Province and Chiang Yeun District, Kosumpisai District in Mahasarakham Province to practice wet season rice cropping over 264,000 Rais and dry season rice cropping over 180,000 Rais with average yield of 65 tanks/rai at total income of 2,000 million bah/year.
  4. To supply raw water to the Waterworks in Khon Kean Province, Khon Kean University, Sriphacharindra Military Camp and 4 Industrial firms via Right Main Canal.
  5. To encourage fish farming in paddy fields and natural watercourses over n ateas of 7,000 Rais.
  6. To maintain headwater downstream of the Ubonratana Dam for Hydro-power generation.

Project Description

          The Nong Wai Operation and Maintenance Project is of Weir Type complete with distribution drainage, flood mitigation, feeder rods and telecommunications system.

Distribution System

The distribution of both banks in the Lam Nam Pong are:-

 

 

          Right Distribution System consists of 1 main canal of capacity 15.80 cubic metre/sec. 47.490 km. 15 laterals 80.116 km. and 240 ditches of 530 km. to convey water for cultivation areas of 69,997 Rais in Muang and Nam Pong districts, Khon Kean Province.

Right Main Canal

          Left Distribution system consists of 1 main canal of capacity 37.20 cubic meter/sec. 82.909 km. 56 laterals of 296.262 km. and 584 ditches of 1,296.864 km. to convey water for cultivation areas of 194,023 Rais in Nam Pong, Sumsoong District, Khon Kean Province and Chiang Yeun, Kosumpisai District, Mahasarakham Province.

 

Left Main Canal

Drainage system

          The drainage systems are also provided on both banks of the Lam Nam Pong.

Right drainage system consists of 21 drainage canals of 80.338 km.

Left drainage system consists of 52 drainage canals of 274.832 km.

Huay Chiangsong Electric pumping Flood Mitigation System

Flood Mitigation System The flood mitigations system consists of

  • Embankments along the right banks of the Lam Nan Pong and Nam Chi 27,517 km.
  • Embankments long the left banks of the Lam Nam Pong and Nam Chi 75,494 km.
  • 10 Electric water pumpings at Huay Chiangsong, total pumping capacity 30 cubic metre/sec.

 

O&M roads

The O&M roads of 574,524 km. served as transportation routes for farms production from the project areas to the markets.

 

          The Pong River or Lam Nam Pong is the only main watercourse flowing past this project.  It originates in the Petchaboon mountain range and froms the boundary line between Sibunruang  and Nonsang districts of Nongbualamphu and Sichomphu and Phuwieng District of Khon Kean Province before aiming into the Ubonratana Reservoir.  After this point, Flows thru the Nong Wai Operation and Maintenance project and finally joins the Chi River at the The Phra Sub-District, Muang District, Khon Kean Province. 

 

Rainfall

          The project area is influenced by the Southwest monsoon originating in the Indian Ocean with average annual rainfall of 1,198.4 mm.

Project Boundaries

North: bounded by Friendship Highway, Nam Pong District, Khon Kean Province.

South:  bounded by Chi River, Kosumpisai District, Mahasarakham Province.

East:    bounded by Kranuan District, Khon Kean Province.

West:    bounded by Muang District, Khon Kean Province.

 

Climate

Generally climate is hot and humidity.

 

Soil

Mostly loam, sandy loam and clay in alluvial plain.

 

Population

          In 2013, total of project population covered 5 Districts and 2 provinces. There are  Nampong District , Sumsoong Disctrict and Muang Khon Kean.  Total population  259,970 person.
